Understanding wisdom teeth and oral surgery
Most adults can have up to four wisdom teeth, also called third molars. Not everyone has four, and some never come through the gum. They erupt later than the other teeth, often between 17 and 25, and there is not always room for them.
A wisdom tooth that is partly through can inflame the gum around it. Repeated swelling, pain, limited opening, or fever are reasons to have it assessed. Removal is a surgical procedure and is explained with X-rays beforehand. The current website notes that difficult cases are referred to a specialist.
