dentalA dental bridge is a fixed (Not removable) prosthesis to replace missing teeth either in the front or the back of the mouth. The dentist will discuss the best possible option for you since there are many different types of bridges.

The more commonly used today are the all porcelain bridges because of their high aesthetics. However as a material porcelain fused to metal is also used because of its lower cost. It also has a high strength. A bridge consists usually of crowns or caps fitted over teeth which are on either side of the missing tooth (the supporting teeth), and the new replacement tooth filling the gap is fused to these two crowns.

Once cemented it is not removed. Bridges last for many years, but may need replacement at some point. The number of supporting teeth of a bridge may vary depending on the number of missing teeth being replaced in the gap.

The main reasons for doing a fixed bridge are to fill up a gap between teeth which will in turn help you to chew better and speak better; and improve our smile if at the front of the mouth. They also stop other teeth from drifting out of position and keep the face and cheeks supported.

Can one always have a bridge done to replace missing teeth? Only if the proposed supporting teeth are healthy and their surrounding bone is also strong and healthy. It is best to discuss with your dentist the possibilities of replacing any missing teeth depending also on time frames and budgets.
Bridges, as with crowns, need regular maintenance and daily cleaning, also underneath that part of the bridge replacing your missing tooth/ teeth. Special floss and brushes are available for this purpose. every 6 months the bridge should be checked at the dentist.

Apart from the bridges shown here, other more conservative bridges are available such as Maryland bridges. However your dentist will discuss with you the best options for you.
